The front, rear, and side bumper structures are intended to absorb events up to 15 MPH, with minimal damage or cost of repair. Additionally, they project a toughness and strength, and give this ultra-light vehicle a sense of security.
Front bumper
The front bumper system consists of molded structural foam; designed to rest against the front-mounted spare tire. The combination of the tire and foam effectively creates an elastic pneumatic energy absorber. The foam mold is attached with straps, which cinch tight to the wheel with buckles, and is easily removed. In addition, rubberized cylindrical bushings on the front swing-arms can also absorb energy, preventing damage during low speed impacts.
Rear bumper
The entire rear suspension geometry is designed to function as a bumper, to fully-compress the rear suspension (including the compression of the pneumatic tire).
Side-step bumper
The side step doubles as side impact structural support. There is an additional component to the side step, in that since this is a three-wheel vehicle, it functions as out-hauler brace, and in extreme situations it prevents the vehicle from rolling over.
